It's hard trying to keep up with all the social networking that helps sell your artwork. When you think about it, I've got my two sites addicted2glassfusion.etsy.com and addicted2glassfusion.artfire.com and then you have twitter, pinterest, facebook, blog, and everything else out there. It's really hard to figure out what's the best source to use. So, I just plug away and I try to keep my etsy and artfire sites going.

Recently though, artfire did some changes. It is very difficult to see what's going on. The images online are huge. You have to click in the upper left hand corner on "catalog" to see the categories. The typical buyer would not know this. The shop looks like it went through a hurricane. It looks like after the hurricane had moved on, the items are stuck where they landed. I'm not sure how it looks on my smartphone yet. I am being told the updates done 10/1 are to make viewing on your phone better. I sure hope so. If you are a buyer, I will ask you to bear with my site and for the time being, shop on my etsy shop until things get sorted out on artfire. I'm not sure I'll keep my artfire site going because it's not really cost effective for me to do so at the present time. If you go to that site and it's closed, please check my etsy site which is in order and categorized and easy to sort through.

Now for the updates of what's going on. I've gotten busy selling my supplies. In fact, I'm so busy, I haven't been able to focus on what I love; making new glass items. I'm contemplating when a few of my items sell out, not purchase any new ones to replace them. I know I'll continue selling my necklace wires and other necklace findings. I will keep my square mirrors because I can use those and of course my new fabulous square wine stoppers. As for all the other items, it just takes a lot of time. I really want to do what I love so I'm torn at the moment.

Necklace wires come in a variety of colors, lengths and screw clasp or magnetic clasp. I love the finished look they give my pendants.

Here's a finished pendant using a necklace wire to compliment the colors in the pendant.
This is my favorite purchase recently to use with my glass. It is perfectly square so it is easy to work with, with my glass.

This is how awesome these bottle stoppers look to decorate a shelf in your bathroom or on a decorative shelf in some homes. This is a great way to store bath salts in different scents so you can use what you're in the mood for. I got these bottles at Hobby Lobby and I'm going to take epsom salt and add essential oils to them. With this display I will be able to use three different scents so I can use whatever I'm in the mood for. I'm also thing I might do one as a scented sugar scrub.

This is how great the finished wine stopper looks up close. It is shown in the bottles above and it can be used for wine or any decorative bottle.

Here is the square mirror that is perfect for many craft uses. I love it because it's easy to use with my glass.

This is a finished mirror with 3mm of glass. I love this mirror because you can use it for fully fused glass or 1 sheet of glass. The sides are perfectly square and I round the corners of my glass just slightly to have a smooth finish.

A little about what I've been making and my cremation items. Over the last year I had been doing many custom orders for cremation items. Here are some examples of what I have been making.

SOMETHING BLUE
Something Blue Cremation Ring. This beautiful blue piece was made so the bride could walk down the aisle with her father.

Blue ring with an adjustable ring finding so it can be adjusted.

Hair clip with ashes for the bride to be. Best part, it can be worn after the wedding too.

This is the same piece as above before it was attached to the ring base.

I love the idea of the "something blue" piece I made, that I decided to offer many colors. I made a color bar of the available colors so my customers can choose their own colors. The finished color with the ashes is slightly different than the color bar because I cap the cremation piece with clear glass, whereas the color bar is shown uncapped.

Here is a pink cremation piece I made for one of my customers. I cannot remember at this time if this was #5 or #7, but I love how the heart sits right in it. The blue one above bubbles up just slightly. This is the fun part about my cremation items, it's always a surprise how it'll turn out. No two pieces will be the same; therefore my customers get unique items.

CREMATION SUN CATCHERS
Last year, my grandfather passed away. I struggled to make some amazing wall hangings for my family because it was now personal on a different level. I love how each one came out differently. The ashes form the walkway through the flowers at the bottom of the piece. The bubbles are bigger than I like them to be, but these are cremation items made with ashes, not glass, so they tend to be a little different each time.

MY NEWEST PIECES - PENDANTS MADE WITH ASHES
So, now for my favorite items in this posting. I entered a fused glass competition a few days ago and felt that since my most unique items are my cremation items I should make one for the competition. Here is what I came up with. I am so happy with them and I cannot tell you how amazing they are.

This beautiful orange sunset pendant is made with my grandfather's ashes and they form the walkway through the rocks at the bottom of the pendant. This is the pendant I entered into the contest. It was the most beautiful. It represents the freedom my grandfather now has to not feel lonely anymore without my grandmother. She passed away several years before him. The birds represent my grandparents in a beautiful place, together again. This style of pendant is for sale for custom orders on my etsy site. It will be for sale on my artfire site in the near future.

This amazing blue and cream pendant is also made with my grandfather's ashes. It reminds my of my summers as a teenager in Oregon. I stayed a few summers with my grandparents. Where they lived, there was the deep woods behind their house. My brother's, sister and I would play in the woods because it was like it's own world. When you got to the end of the woods, you would come out onto the sand dunes. In the distance past the sand dunes, was the beautiful ocean. This brings me back to my childhood and brings a smile to my face. This style of pendant is for sale for custom orders on my etsy site. It will be for sale on my artfire site in the near future.
This is my favorite non cremation item I just made. I wasn't sure how the end piece would turn out since the green was so dark. It ended up being one of my favorite non cremation pieces. This one is going to one of my most amazing friends to brighten her day.
Out of all the pendants I made, this is the only one I will actually be selling. All of the other pieces are for family and friends. This is a true beauty with all the sweeping colors in the background. A friend said the colored parts remind them of the city lights in the distance.
I almost kept this one for myself. It's going to be given to a special friend of mine who always is there for me.

I cannot tell you how hard I worked on these pendants to come up with the right colors and it's amazing that most of these took 5-7 firings in the kiln. They're not quickly made, but they are absolutely spectacular. I will be making some more and offering them for sale on my website. In fact I have more pieces in the kiln now.
I'm not very good with social media and I'm a little challenged when it comes to all the different types of technology that are useful to crafters like myself. One of my new favorites, is Pinterest. I get a few more "recover webpage" error messages than I'd like when I'm on the computer, so I use my phone mostly to view and post on my board. I have less chance of being kicked out from my phone. Not sure why that is. It's a little frustrating, but I'm sure Pinterest will fix it at some point. I'm sure most of you use it already, but I have to give a shout out and say thank you to Pinterest for coming up with the most useful tool I can use. It's easy and I can put everything together in one place. My favorite category is, OF COURSE, fused glass. I have been able to look at other people's art and save it to my board for inspiration. There are so many talented people out there. Of course I'm posting some of my work and directing people back here to my blog, so it's a win, win in my book. http://pinterest.com/addicted2glass/ is my link for my pinterest if you are interested in taking a peak at my likes. Of course the name is a little different because it took my login addicted2glass from my Twitter name and Twitter only allows a certain number of characters so it doesn't exactly match my business name Addicted2glassfusion. Like I said before, I'm a little challenged, but I'm hoping to change the name eventually if it's possible to be my full business name.

In this blog, I wanted to reflect on 2012 a little and what my plans are for 2013

2012 was a great year for me in getting my fusing skills more tuned in. I am getting more organized with my firing notes and trying to keep pretty good logs of what works and what doesn't. I was disappointed with how my craft shows did and the amount of time I spent making things, setting up for craft shows, taking stuff down and all the in-between work. The economy here in Reno is not what it's been in the past. At this point I am going to skip most, maybe all craft shows in 2013. I did fairly well at 1 of the events and there was heavy traffic at another one. I will decide at a later time if I want to do one or both of these again. As it was this summer/fall, I did 4 craft shows this year and it did not pay off. Unfortunately, the McQueen craft show was a bust for me. I purchased 2 tables in a prime location and the traffic was not there. McQueen, unfortunately did not have the amount of people that have been there in the past. I am going to visit there next year as a customer and see if next year is any better. I did visit a few other events this year and saw that there was traffic, but people weren't buying a lot. So, for the upcoming year, I am going to focus on my online websites artfire and etsy and have a little more fun making some items for my home. In the past I've focused so much on making stuff for other people, so now I want to have some fun and play with some ideas and start adding more art into my own home.

A few of my favorite items I recently made are shown below. This was the first time I used glass frit and made bowls with them. They are truely awesome. I made a variety of colors and I think I may put them in my kitchen to use. I also used glass frit to make my first wall pockets which are very pretty. I was a little nervous to make them and everyone loves them. I haven't sold any online, but I'd like to get some bigger pieces made to offer to my customers.

Fused glass platter and matching bowl. The platter is really large. It took so many firing steps. First I had to fuse the bottom part into bricks, then I used my saw to cut them into this design. My next step was to lay the platter out and fuse it. The final step was to slump it into a mold to get the shape. It is truely amazing and a work of art. Looking back on it, I would say, I spent a good 17 hours making this platter, maybe more. What a beauty it is in person. I'm so in love with it, I'm not sure I can part with it. I would love to sell it, hmm, we'll see. Maybe you'll see it on my etsy or artfire site.

The bowl at the top matches so perfectly too. I used the same colored glass so that I could have a matching set. The bowl turned out so fun, that I think I might make a few sets and sell them in groups.

I made two of these wall pockets. One had a deep chocolate brown glass around the edge and this one was made with the blue color. As you can see this matches the bowl and platter perfectly. This was given as a gift to my friend for Christmas and it matches her new house colors. The other one was sold to one of my favorite customers that visited me at the McQueen craft show.

Here are the two links to my Pinterest site if you want to see some other artist's work as well as a few more of my items.
http://pinterest.com/pin/211174954543892/

My next exciting pieces were my two beautiful potmelts. A potmelt is where you put a bunch of glass in a bowl, raise it above the board below and melt the glass at higher temperatures than most other glass until they become liquid and basically pour out of the bowl onto the board below. I have to say, they turned out so amazing I am definitely going to try them again. I had a few problems setting them up, but once I really thought about what I was doing, I went for it. Here's the link to my Pinterest site with these two bowls. http://pinterest.com/pin/211174954543870/.

The one on the right was supposed to be much more green than it turned out, but that didn't matter, it is beautiful. The one on the left was made with a lot of fuschia and purple glass, but it turned out more blue than I thought. What I learned from this technique, is to have fun. It'll be a surprise so just go with it. I can't wait to make a few more.

I just purchased some new colored nail files. They are perfect for my fused glass. I had a few mosaic pieces that were the perfect size, so I attached them and they are so striking. I already have 3 people in mind for them, so I will be working on more in the near future to sell on my etsy site. http://pinterest.com/pin/211174954554874/

Looking forward at 2013, I'll take a step back and re-evaluate my etsy and artfire shops. Some of my pictures could be a little better. I have taken some photography classes and I've been trying out my new methods so my pictures have improved quite a bit. Another goal I want to achieve it my packaging. I'd like to give another shout out to Pinterest. I have found and posted so many ideas about packaging to my Pinterest board, I can't wait to start playing with some new ideas. I ordered some new gift bags and boxes online. I received my new Paw Print bags that I can't wait to start using with my local vet customers when I finish their pet memorial pendants. The bags are white with big black paw prints and I will put black paper inside to decorate it further. They are going to be super cute. I will post a picture when I have a little more time. I also ordered some colored boxes (turquoise with brown and dark brown with light brown. They are the perfect size for 1 pendant. I will post some pictures when I have time to play with the packaging.

Two items I'd like to try to make are some large flowers for my wall and boiled glass. When I have some new items to show you, you'll be the first to know. Just keep checking back to see what's new. I think you can also be added to see when I post something new.

I hope if you're another fuser, my information is useful or gives you inspiration. addicted2glassfusionhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11544757082113126047noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5086911553532332560.post-71376724466140221582012-11-11T08:44:00.001-08:002012-11-11T08:44:55.804-08:00Fused Glass Scenery Pendants and Wall HangingI wanted to show some of my favorite scenery pendants and a wall hanging. This is the finished wall hanging I made for friend of mine. I think it's the perfect gift. It turned out amazing and my friend loved it. I love creating these because when they all come together with the chain and beads, they look absolutely perfect. addicted2glassfusionhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11544757082113126047noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5086911553532332560.post-35706851838356842012-06-26T21:07:00.001-07:002012-06-26T21:07:54.488-07:00Art Paws for Artown craft show my new business card holdersI'm getting ready for a local craft show in July 15th called Art Paws. It's being done in conjunction with Artown at McKinley school in Reno. I went last year, but not as a vendor. I was amazed to see about 100 dogs; maybe more. It was a perfect event. I felt this is the perfect opportunity to showcase my pet remembrance jewelry, picture frames and sun catchers. I was so excited to find they still had room for me to have a booth, so now I'm busy working on getting a few new pet related items done.

I just finished some new business card holders and they are absolutely perfect. These are excellent quality and you can fit several of your business cards into the cases. They are similar to my keychains which will also be at the craft show. Below are some pictures of some of my items you'll see at my booth. You'll also find some pet related rings and hopefully some earrings if I can get them finished in time. My scenery pendants will also be available. I posted a picture in my last blog to give you an example of what they look like.
Here are my new scenery pendants. I took the picture with my phone which turned out pretty good. All I need to do now is attach a bail to each one and they'll be ready to list on my website. I've sold three already which is very exciting. I would love to try the kitty cat sitting on the porch as a pet remembrance pendant. I think they would be darling if they worked. addicted2glassfusionhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11544757082113126047noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5086911553532332560.post-25967052935277570652012-05-13T23:03:00.002-07:002012-05-13T23:10:52.315-07:00My grinder arrived just in time for Mother's Day and I was able to finish my fused glass wall hangings. I am absolutely happy with the final pieces. Here they are.

In this piece I wanted to bring out the darker colors so I used darker and lighter beads. I love how it brings it all together. I also love the color of this chain. It's almost a peach color.

This amazing picture is delicate and feminine which is perfect for the person it is made fore. The wire is the same wire as in the picture above, but it is a totally different look, especially because of the light pink or peach colored beads at the bottom, which compliment the whole wall hanging.

In this wall hanging, I used a darker chain and I found the awesome focal wire bead and two small glass beads to bring it all together.

This is why I love to work with glass. I can make amazing memorable pieces of art for people to enjoy. I love this new concept; rather than putting your photo in an album, you can now turn it into glass and hang it on your wall to enjoy every day.

If you like these, check back in a few weeks to see how my other wall hangings turn out.
addicted2glassfusionhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11544757082113126047noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5086911553532332560.post-24569220462441240642012-05-09T21:19:00.001-07:002012-05-09T21:29:57.803-07:00I'm very pleased with how my wall hangings ended up after firing them in the kiln. The edges need some grinding and then a final firing in the kiln after that. So far, I'm am so happy with how these turned out. I had to send the top part of my grinder back to the company because the grinding pad is stuck onto the grinder. I am hoping I get it back in time, but I'm not sure. If not, they will have to be a little late which would be disappointing because of how much time I took to get them ready.

Here are some of my almost finished pieces that will all need grinding and firing one more time.

In the piece above the top picture is approximately 5x5" and each of the smaller pieces are about

1 1/2". Each of the smaller pieces will be hung with chain. This piece will be fairly large. I don't think I would make it any bigger, but the smaller pieces are a little too small and some of the detail got a little lost. It's still amazing and I can't wait to get it all completed.

In this piece, I wasn't sure how the mountains behind them would turn out, but I love it. You can see all the detail and the dimensions of the different hills behind them. I made the top piece 5x5" and the bottom piece approximately 3". I think the larger 3" piece turned out better than the 1 1/2" pieces in the piece above.

This one turned out great, but definitely needs some grinding on the larger piece. In the bottom piece where the wire hoop is, I will hang a bead off the bottom to give it a little something extra.

I chose gold for this one because it brings out the feel of Autumn. I love nature, and this one is an amazing piece. I cannot wait until this one is finished and she sees it. I didn't choose to put a hook on the bottom piece to keep it clean and simple.

In this wedding wall hanging, I was going to make the entire piece white and the champagne glasses in the second picture gold, but the outline of the champagne glasses was too hard to see. The person in this piece loves antiques and is a very romantic person so the gold reminded me of her. I felt that gold was more her than silver. In this finished piece, I think gold was definitely the right choice.

This wall hanging is perfect in white because of the wedding. It brings out the wedding theme of her white dress and keeps it bright and simple. This one will be hung with silver wire and silver chain with a clear or white bead at the bottom.

After I finish the wall hangings, I will certainly post them online. Not all of them are intended to be given for Mother's Day so you'll see some online sooner than others.

Thank you for stopping by and checking out my work.
addicted2glassfusionhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11544757082113126047noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5086911553532332560.post-24620737554228114662012-05-01T12:34:00.001-07:002012-05-01T12:34:35.497-07:00Mother's Day Wall HangingThis Mother's Day fused glass wall hanging is only about 40% completed. I'm very excited to see it completed and I've done several test pieces so I'm pretty confident of what it will look like when I'm done. If you're a fused glass artist, you know that sometimes as much as you prep and test, sometimes things don't work as planned. I have high hopes though, that it will be finished as I hope it will be.

In the picture above, this is the layout of the wall hanging. The pictures in glass are on top of a paper towel so you can see them better. I will be painting each piece and then firing a piece of glass on the back. Each of the pieces will have a hook in them and they will be hanging with chain to connect them to the piece above it. The overall length of the wall hanging will probably be about 15"-20" long depending on how long I make the top chain or wire. I will be using a gold color background and the finished color will be a little lighter than the gold in the picture below.

In this picture, these are some of the pieces that are getting ready to be fired. As you can see in the picture with the green background on the bottom right, there is a small hook at the top. Each of the pieces in the wall hanging above will have small hooks fired in them so I can hang them with chain to the piece above and below it.

Wish me luck on the final piece. I'll post it when I'm done so you can see how it came out, so if you're curious too, keep checking my blog.
addicted2glassfusionhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11544757082113126047noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5086911553532332560.post-78079347829236148192012-04-08T16:27:00.000-07:002012-04-08T16:27:17.927-07:00Pet photo fused into glass for my remembrance pendants

fused sepia slide of my dog

So what are all these pictures about? Well, I'm very excited to start sharing some new ideas.

I just took some amazing classes and I've been testing a few of the ideas out as seen in the pictures above. I've wanted to take my pet remembrance items further and one of the concepts I learned is to fuse a picture to my glass. It's definitely what I've been looking to do. In the above pictures you'll see my pictures I put into glass. I've heard that the sepia or brown color the decals turn look best on white and they're right. I tried some on clear and took the picture with a white background. The 3rd picture is what my dog looks like in a color photo. In the 4th and 5th picture you'll see one of my personal pictures and what it looks like on glass. I'm very excited to start offering new items to my customers so they can enjoy their personal memories fused into glass. Whether it's their pet or a place they've visited or their family, this gives me a lot of new ways to improve my work. In fact, I have already posted a listing on my website if you're interested in this pet remembrance option please click this link and click into the cremation for ashes category http://www.etsy.com/shop/addicted2glassfusion. At this point, I probably won't be painting on the pet remembrance pendants, because most pets are black, white or brown and I don't think they have the powders I need for the painting, but I will keep playing with the idea to see if it works. In the pictures below you'll see the same concept I learned in my class, but we painted with the sepia images and they are amazing. Unfortunately we weren't able to clean the glass or do any grinding so the sizes of the glass aren't the same, but this will give you an idea how beautiful they are. I can't wait to show you some completed items and put them up for sale.

Another class I took was screen printing on glass and that was an amazing class. I learned how to make screenprints and turn my pieces into works of art. This was completely different and I loved it just as much, maybe more because of how brilliant everything turned out. Again, keep in mind the pictures below are from my class and we didn't have time to grind them or clean them off before firing, but they are still amazing. I will definitely be offering some of these very soon on both of my websites.

I will do my best to update my blog, but if you're interested in purchasing items like these, it's best to check either of my websites first because I don't post here as often as I'd like. Hopefully you'll see some new work up for sale in the next week or two.
The above pictures are of my booth and a few of the watches I had at this weekend's craft show. My main goal was to share my pet memory jewelry, picture frames and sun catchers to customers that are looking for a remembrance piece for their pet or loved ones ashes. It was fun to share this part of my glass work with others here locally.

As you can see I have many items available for sale, most of which are not pictured online. I will be doing my best to get new items posted online over the next several weeks in anticipation of Christmas, so please keep checking both my artfire site and my etsy site.
Here's a few items that came out.

The animal items will all be night lights. I will be making some drawer pulls to go with them, as well as I've finished two children's clocks. The lighting is terrible but I was so exited I wanted to put some pictures up for you to see. The elephant is just as cute as can be.
I did make some new rings on sterling silver ring bases as well as some new mosaic book marks. I thought I should now trying to concentrate on some platters similar to my platter that was featured in Culture Magazine. The first two pictures are still in the kiln so they look like they have white in the middle because they're on a white paper in the kiln. The glass in the middle where it looks white is actually a clear glass that you can see through. The platter that has blue and green in it is absolutely amazing. The 2nd picture, where it's just blue and clear is similar to the platter in the magazine, but much larger. I'll be gluing four glass feet on the bottom of the platters so they'll sit just above the counter top, as shown in picture three which was the platter that was featured in culture cheese magazine. I think these platters will be a great addition to my craft show.
I'm still trying to work on perfecting colored bubbles in glass. I've made a couple fused glass night lights and platters but I have a little more work to do before I'm happy with them.

The picture above shows one of my sample pieces with bubbles in it. I fused 16 test pieces and this one was my favorite. I hope to perfect the bubbles and eventually sell it. For now, I'm just trying to get it exactly how I want it. I've probably tried 40 pieces and several kilns full of glass to get it how I want it. I've made a couple of night lights with several colors but the bubbles weren't as big as I wanted so I'm still going to make some more.

I was very busy today and was able to start both kilns today. My small kiln has some pendants that I tried my newest bubble mixture in, so I'll see tomorrow if they turned out. I also started my larger kiln this evening and it has a beautiful green platter as well as a beautiful burnt red pet memory picture frame for a friend of mine. Not sure if the picture frame will turn out because the paper I use to keep the glass separated for the picture to go in, might not come out from the glass. Last time I fused the green frame, it was extremely difficult to get the paper out. After 30 minutes, I finally did it, but I could reach the bottom of where the paper was. That's because it only went down about 4". The burnt red frame will have a space for a 5 x 7 picture to go in, which means it goes down 7". It will be a shame if it doesn't come out because of how long it took me to make it.

I am also making some more of my mosaic pendants. They're in the kiln and it's my 2nd time firing. I have 1-2 more times to fuse in the kiln before I can call them pendants, but I have some new colors and so far they look really beautiful.

I'll post some more pictures when I have them. addicted2glassfusionhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11544757082113126047noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5086911553532332560.post-68190988690175044242011-07-27T21:41:00.000-07:002011-07-27T21:41:10.478-07:00Pet Memory Cremains Photo Wall HangingI just finished my first pet memory wall hanging. It measures approximately 10" wide x 7" long. I took a translucent green glass for the base and fused a clear piece on top so you can see the 4" x 6"picture clearly. I sprinkled some dichroic pieces around the picture as well as fusing two etched dichroic cats at the top. My pet ashes are shaped into a heart just below the picture.

To finish it off, I took some picture hanging wire to give it some strength and put a couple of beads on the wire.

I'm very happy how it turned out. I have listed a custom made picture frame on both of my websites if you are interested.
Although the price was listed wrong, it was still amazing to be featured in this wonderful magazine. I hope it inspires you if you are another fused glass artist.

This one has already been sold, but if you want one made to your specifications, I would love to make another one.
Most of the pictures are of items still inside my kiln so some of the glass is facing different directions. The cute animals I thought would make great drawer pulls for a child’s bedroom dresser or even a bathroom. I have a zebra, monkey, elephant, and giraffe. I also have a unicorn shape that would be darling as drawer pulls as well as a pendant for a little girl.
I fired some new cremation jewelry pieces. One is a large dog paw print and a got a new cat style. Two other new styles are for cremation for people's ashes. One is a beautiful path to a sun and the other is a parent with a child and they will make wonderful gifts for those that would like something unique with ashes of their loved ones. I'm getting so busy with my memory jewelry that I thought it was time to make use of my big kiln and fire it with a lot of colors.

You can also see where I've tried to write pets names on some of the backs of some pendants. Some of the letters didn't turn out well or at all, but for my first time, I was pretty pleased with it. I will definitely try again. It also didn't work to have lettering and heart shaped ashes, so the ashes really don't look like I'd like them to. I won't market the name on the back until I can figure out why the letters didn't turn out very well.
Finally, I fused some musical notes and they are really stunning. I can't wait to list them.
I've come a long way since I started. Some of the pictures I'm posting are from one of my pet's ashes and some are my customer's items that I took pictures of.

The first several pet memory pendants are my dichroic etched pendants.

The pendant below was painted with glass and the ashes are sprinkled in the sky to represent the pet in heaven. In person, where the ashes were sprinkled, it looked like clouds in the sky. It was my first pendant for a customer.
I fused a wire in between the glass for hanging in a window. I fused my cat's ashes on top of the heart shape and I sprinkled it with different glass powders and dichroic glass. It really turned out amazing. I can't wait to put a ribbon on top and hang it in the window.addicted2glassfusionhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11544757082113126047noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5086911553532332560.post-61076876916868700912011-04-24T18:34:00.000-07:002011-04-24T18:34:33.775-07:00swirl art mirrors, purse hooks and wine stoppersI'm really excited to announce my new items. I have taken a few pictures for now and will get a few more posted soon when I can.

My swirl art isn't glass, but it's amazing and unique. No two will ever have the same design.

My compact mirrors have two mirrors inside. On the outside a floral design is engraved on one side and the swirl art is glued to the other side. They measure approximately 2 1/2" in diameter.

My purse hooks or purse hangers measure 1 3/4" in diameter when closed. They have a rubber backing to prevent slipping off of the surface of the table. They will fit onto tables that have a thickness of 2 1/8" or less.
Let me know what you think of these items. Hopefully in the next several weeks you'll see these posted on my artfire site as well as my etsy site.addicted2glassfusionhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11544757082113126047noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5086911553532332560.post-14189442884212450892011-04-17T15:45:00.000-07:002011-04-17T15:45:02.794-07:00Pet memory and recycled bottlesIt's amazing what a little light can do. I finally hired an electrician and had him instal 3 large lights in my studio. I'm so happy. I just wish I had installed them earlier. Now I don't have to stop working late afternoon if I don't want to.

I'm trying to perfect my cremation/memory items. I have finished my first hanging sun catcher. The back of it has an indentation of a heart and the ashes are on the top in the shape of a heart. I've learned how to shape the ashes into a heart and it really makes the whole pendant really special. I can't wait to hear what my customer thinks of it when she gets it.

I've also been keeping many, many wine bottles until I had just the right idea for them. I am running my kiln now and I hope it turns out. If it works, I'll have a wine bottle with my initial behind it. I'll post a picture of it here to let you see if it worked or not.addicted2glassfusionhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11544757082113126047noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5086911553532332560.post-55506602479194068672011-04-03T16:55:00.000-07:002011-04-03T16:55:47.148-07:00My new bookmarks
Life has been busy for me, but getting back into my studio more. I've completed a lot of new bookmarks. They've turned out really great. I've taken some of my piece of glass that didn't quite make it as pendants and found some really large paperclip style bookmarks to glue them to and boy did they turn out fantastic.

I've also been busy doing a lot of pet memory pendants. I've had some requests to do people's ashes instead of pet ashes and I think that's a great idea, so I think I may include that in my listings.

I hope you like my new bookmarks. I've posted a few on my etsy site and will be posting some on my artfire site very soon.

Pet memory jewelry is where your beloved pet ashes are fused in between two pieces of glass forever. You don't have to tell anyone what's in the pendant unless you want to. It's a really great idea and one that I've wanted to do for a long time. It just wasn't cost effective to run my large kiln for one or two pendants because of the cost of the electricity. When I learned how to create my fused glass watches, I had to purchase a small kiln where the shelf size is about 6 x 6" and it runs on a 110v outlet so the cost of running such a small kiln isn't too prohibitive. I got my first order last week and wow, the pendant is so darling. The one for the customer has flowers, green grass, and blue sky. The flower represents life and the memory of the living pet and the blue sky where I've sprinkled the ashes, represent the pet in heaven. The pendant in person looks like there are clouds where the ashes are. This is an amazing pendant. I hope my customer loves it and what I tried to create for her.

The other pendants were created at the same time using my own pet's ashes. I love how the red, purple and blue one turned out because I can have any color I want, I could use red, pink, purple, blue, yellow, orange, green, white, black, brown. I have about 25 colors to choose from. The other clear pendants have dichroic glass and some even have glass pieces that color the pendants. I still have to decide how to finish them to hang as a pendant. I may try to wire wrap them because I don't really like when the bail really stands out. I'm okay if it shows a little, but not as much as these would show. The two black pendants are created different; one you can see the ashes from the front and the other you cannot. For the black pendant that you can't see the ashes from the front are where the ashes can only be seen from the back. I need to try these types of pendants again and put more dichroic color on them. They didn't turn out as vibrant as I'd like, but they're still really beautiful.

Here are my pendants for you to see.

Keep checking back and as I get more orders I'll post the finished pendants online.

Here's what I found out about Consignment shops:

I have found that depending on the consignment shop, they'll keep different percentages of the proceeds; 30%, 40% and even 50%. You need to decide are they working to earn the amount of commission they are getting? Ask them questions, what are they going to do for you for their commission, because that's what consignment is, "a commission". Do they let you keep your cards there to promote yourself? Are they taking your items to any craft shows, farmers markets or other out of store venues, or does the item stay in their shop just for their walk in customers? Do they have a website and will your items appear on their website to draw in customers?

Some will have you sign contracts and some won't. If you're signing a contract with them, read it and if you don't like what it says, see if you can change the wording. Make sure you discuss with them, what happens if an item is broken or stolen so you know? Most of the time if you're selling items by consignment, you are the one taking the risk if it is broken or stolen. If the item is damaged, you may need to fix it or it may be damaged so bad that you no longer can sell the item. Sometimes your item is stolen and you're out the money, not the store owner. Some shops will reduce the amount of your item over time (basically forcing you to put it on sale) to get the inventory to move more quickly through their shop. If you are not okay with your item being reduced, make sure you come to an agreement.

With consignment, you usually have to wait to get a check either by mail or by dropping by the shop monthly. Dropping by the shop is a great way to keep in contact with the store owner or manager to see what their needs are and show them any new product you're working on. Depending on how far away the shop is, it can be difficult to get there and it takes time out of your day that you could be working on creating more products. I did find going to the shop to be a way to build a relationship with my store owners, but I also found it to be a lot more work than I expected. I was asked to change out my items more frequently than every two months. This took a lot more time than I expected because I would have to go through all of my items, put new price tags on exchanged items and clean the sticky part off the backs of the items I removed from the shop. I then had to update my invoices to reflect the new merchandise that was left in the shop.

Make sure you and the store owner have an uderstanding about the pricing of your item. Are they selling the item for the amount you are listing or are they raising the price so they get more money. One very important thing I learned is, I listed an item for a certain amount and was being paid for what I asked for. Later, because I was dropping off more inventory, I found they had increased the price of the item by so much that I now was only netting 30% of the profit and they were now netting 70% of the item. They were not splitting the increase with me, they were keeping the additional proceeds for themselves. At first I was extremely upset because I priced my items so low in hopes they would sell quickly and I would get more money. The store owner explained that they have to pay their workers, pay credit card fees, power, etc and they need to make a certain amount of money per item to make it worth their while. After they explained it to me, I understood their point, but this was something I hadn't expected, so be aware and ask questions to the store owners.

Consignment and wholesale are really very similar in the fact that it gets your product out there for others to see, and the shop will usually promote you as a local artist. I've found that people love to purchase from local artists. The best part about selling locally, you have a live person in the store trying to sell your item for you on a daily basis which gives you more time to create your art.

I think for now, I'll be focusing on wholesale and see how that works for me. I won't have to wait for a check, I'll probably net the same amount of money and if items get broken or go missing from the shop, I no longer have to take the loss. I may find that store owners aren't as willing to buy wholesale because of the economy, but in the end my time is really valuable and in the end I think I will appreciate selling wholesale more than consignment.

What do you think? Have you had experiences with either or both?addicted2glassfusionhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11544757082113126047noreply@blogger.com0
